from the Scenery look book can be taken at its word. Hardly any other producer consistently sets trends in noble fabrics as the family business Luiz in Cologne: cotton, silk, linen, and cashmere are just some of the hand-picked materials from which the small but fine factory conjures up noble bedlinen and cuddly blankets. The beauty of the products is evident at first glance.
Yet that is only one part of the story. If you want to experience more, you have to touch them. Only then do you notice that the blossom sprays on the CutOut cushion cover are not done in lace, but made from the finest lasered lambskin. Suede, the bedspread from glove-thin goat suede with down filling and cashmere lining, is also a textile masterpiece. The seamstresses already need two full days to precisely seam the elaborate quilting seams by hand. What does such a rarity cost? Around 8,000 euro.
The Luiz brand seems to carry love of exclusive fabrics in its genes. In 2011, the Luiz sisters Anna and Barbara took over the 47-year-old family business. Before that, their mother Rita and father Thomas managed the textile factory in southwest Cologne. They were still known as Interfrotta then and the production was focused entirely on high-value terry towels and bed linen. But the third generation brought along a desire for new products.
Knitted blankets, fur covers, and leather cushions were added; delicate lace, open embroidery, metal-plated brocades, and refined sequins are exhibited in the architare stores in Nagold and Stuttgart, made into completely individual, customised bed decoration. The Luiz textile universe currently consists of 85 individual items, fabrics and yard goods of which 85% are made exclusively for Luiz in Europe.
Around 50 skilled employees contribute to the huge success of the small linen label: Seamstresses and cut-and-stitch professionals make the “Made in Germany” collections unique. They deliver the perfect hand stitch with care and profound skill, ensuring that the Bordon or Ajour embroidery add a very special look to the tucked hem on the cushion.
Delicate lace is crocheted by hand in the factory studios, and goat suede and rabbit blankets are joined with painstaking cross-stitching. Every piece of bed or table linen is made to measure and individually embroidered on request. The basis for this is formed by around 100 fine thread twists and luxurious weaves and 850 colour shades. Production takes place in Germany only, at the company location close to Cologne.
Can’t be done? There is no such thing. Luiz manufacturing combines traditional craftsmanship with modern processing methods. This results in the utmost flexibility and perfection, realising every customer wish. Word got around. And thus, famous celebrities, European royal houses, global political figures, but also boutique hotels and luxury resorts order linen from the Rhineland. No wonder: their linen is highly addictive! Once you’ve acquired a taste for it, you never want to cuddle in another blanket or sleep in other bed linen again.
