The LCW armchair, designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1946, is an outstanding example of modern furniture design of the 20th century. LCW stands for “ Lounge Chair Wood ” and describes the essential character of this design. The armchair consists of a simple plywood shell that was bent and formed from several thin layers of plywood. The curved shape of the shell creates an ergonomic seat that is perfectly adapted to the contours of the body . The LCW armchair was developed as part of the so-called “ Eames Plywood Group ”, a series of furniture pieces that explored the possibilities of bending and shaping plywood.
