ARMCHAIR
RED AND BLUE
RIETVELD DE STIJL
1918
A sculptural armchair with a pure, rational form. An authentic manifesto for the objective approach of neoplasticism initiated by the Dutch movement De Stijl in 1917. A poetry also promoted by Piet Mondrian , whose aim was to search for the essential nature of things, the harmonious equivalence of colors and the exclusive use of the right angle. Rietveld worked on the first prototypes in 1918, expressing the philosophy of organizing space through the monochrome of the elements. As a result, he uses chromatic differentiation to separate the structural elements based on the functions and arrives at the combination of the black structure with colored support elements. This also results in the name change of the work from Slat Chair to Red and Blue.
